How to Show Up in Google AI Mode: What It Reads, What It Cites, and How a Local Business Gets In (2026)

Google AI Mode is the full conversational version of Google Search. It takes a question, breaks it into several sub-questions, runs a Google search for each, reads the top results, and writes an answer with source links. To show up in it, a business needs pages that rank for those sub-questions and answer them directly: what it costs, how long it takes, who it is for, where. For local questions AI Mode also reads the Business Profile, reviews and hours. The work is the same as for AI Overviews, with one addition: cover the follow-up questions a customer asks next, because AI Mode asks them for you.
What AI Mode does with a question
Google describes AI Mode's method as query fan-out. 'Should I replace or repair my roof in Escondido' becomes a handful of searches: roof repair cost Escondido, roof replacement cost Escondido, signs a roof needs replacing, roof lifespan in inland San Diego County, roofing permits Escondido. Each search runs against Google's normal index. AI Mode reads the top results for each, then writes one answer citing the pages it used. So a business appears in AI Mode when it has pages that rank for the sub-questions, not just the head question.
How it differs from AI Overviews and ChatGPT
| AI Overviews | AI Mode | ChatGPT search | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where it appears | Above normal results, on some searches | Its own tab and chat, on demand | Inside ChatGPT |
| Retrieves from | Google's index, the query itself | Google's index, several fan-out queries | Bing's index plus live fetches |
| Local layer | Business Profile for local searches | Business Profile, reviews, hours, Maps | Bing Places, reviews, directories |
| What gets cited | Pages already ranking that answer early | Pages ranking for sub-questions that answer plainly | Pages plus Reddit, LinkedIn and review sites |
| Follow-ups | None | Conversational; asks the next question | Conversational |
Step 1: Cover the sub-questions
List the questions a customer asks around each service: cost, time, permits, materials, warranty, what can go wrong, repair versus replace, how to choose a contractor. Each is a heading on the service page or, where it deserves it, its own page. AI Mode fans out to exactly these, and a site that answers eight of them is cited eight times in one answer. A site with one paragraph per service is cited once or not at all.
Step 2: Answer each one in the first sentence under the heading
The same rule as everywhere in AI search, applied per heading. 'Roof repair in Escondido costs $400 to $1,500 for a typical leak and is done in a day.' Then the detail. AI Mode extracts the sentence, attributes it, and moves on. Hedged openings are skipped.
Step 3: Make the Business Profile the local answer
For 'roofer near me' or 'best roofer in Escondido', AI Mode reads Business Profiles, reviews, hours and service areas alongside pages. Complete profile, right categories, services listed, ten or more photos, reviews answered, and the profile linked from the site's structured data. Reviews that mention the service and the city ('replaced our roof in Escondido in three days') are quoted; 'great service' is not.
Step 4: Be readable and fast
AI Mode reads more pages per question than a normal search shows, and it reads them quickly. Pages that load in under a second get read completely; pages that take five seconds are partially read or dropped. Googlebot and Google-Extended must be allowed. Structured data (LocalBusiness, Service, FAQPage, Offer where prices exist) removes ambiguity about who is answering and what it costs.
Step 5: Watch the follow-ups
AI Mode is a conversation, so after the cost question comes 'who in Escondido can do it this month' or 'what should I ask a roofer before hiring'. Write those pages too: a how-to-choose guide, a what-to-expect guide, an availability note on the contact page. The business that answers the third question in the conversation is the one that gets the call at the end of it.
A monthly panel of ten prompts in AI Mode, logged the same way as ChatGPT and Gemini, shows which sub-questions you are cited for and which a competitor owns. The gaps are the next pages to write.
What to expect
A local business in a green category, with a page per service and city and the sub-questions answered, starts appearing in AI Mode answers for its city within three to six months, usually first for cost and how-long questions. Yellow categories take nine to twelve months. There is no separate 'AI Mode SEO' to buy; it is the same pages, written for the questions AI Mode asks.
