For a store, Shopify is the right tool: checkout, payments, taxes, fraud protection, shipping, apps and fulfillment already work, and a store built from scratch spends its first year catching up to them. What we build is the brand and marketing site that gets a product business found and trusted, hand-coded and fast, with the shop on Shopify linked from it. Why we stopped building stores

A custom storefront is a second business to run: payment compliance, tax rules by state, fraud, returns, inventory sync, shipping rates, abandoned-cart email. Shopify and its apps do all of that for a monthly fee and a percentage of sales, and they do it better than any single developer will. The hand-coded storefronts we built in the past were fast, and every one of them eventually needed a feature Shopify ships for free. We would rather tell you that on the first call.

What to look for when you set up the store

Register the domain in your own name and point shop.yourbrand.com at Shopify, keep the main site on your domain. Pick a fast theme and resist apps you do not need; every app is a script on every page. Turn on Shop Pay and Apple Pay. Write a real returns page. Put your Business Profile, your reviews and your press on the main site, not inside the store. If you already have a Shopify store and only need the brand site around it, that is exactly what we build.

Common questions

Will you build my online store?

No. For a store, use Shopify; it does checkout, payments, taxes, fraud and fulfillment better than anything we would write. We build the brand and marketing site around it and link the two.

Do you do Shopify theme work or migrations?

No. Shopify has a large pool of theme developers and migration services; we will point you to the right kind. Our work is the hand-coded site your brand lives on.

What about a brewery or winery that ships?

The site carries the list, events, private-events page and club sign-up, and links to Commerce7, VinoShipper or WineDirect for compliant shipping. The store is theirs; the site around it is ours.

What about booking and payments for a service business?

Booking through your scheduling software, Vagaro, Mindbody, Jane, Square Appointments and the like, is embedded on every site we build and included. A booking or payment system we write ourselves is Custom work, quoted after a discovery sprint.
