How to Measure AI Visibility: Tracking Citations in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews (2026)
By Alexey Chasin · Updated September 25, 2026 · 8 min read
AI visibility is measured with a fixed panel of prompts run monthly in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Mode, logging whether the business is named, which page is cited, and who else is named. Four numbers matter: share of prompts where you are named, share where your page is cited, branded searches in Search Console, and calls and forms. Tools like Otterly, SE Ranking's AI tracker and Semrush's AI toolkit automate the panel for $30 to $150 a month; a manual panel of ten prompts takes an hour. Traffic is not on the list, because over half of searches now end without a click.
Why the old numbers stopped working
Rankings and traffic measured a world where the customer clicked. In the fourth quarter of 2025, 56% of Google desktop searches ended without a click, and AI Overviews and AI Mode answer a growing share of questions in place. A business can be the source of the answer, get the call, and show nothing in traffic. By 2027 the studies expect businesses to be judged on citations, brand searches and assisted revenue rather than rankings. So the measurement has to move to where the customer's decision now happens: the answer.
Build the prompt panel
Write ten to thirty prompts a real customer would type, split into three kinds. Recommendation prompts: 'best plumber in Escondido', 'who builds dental websites in San Diego'. Question prompts your pages answer: 'how much does a water heater replacement cost in Escondido'. Brand prompts: 'is Velour Web legit', 'what does Velour Web do'. Keep the panel fixed for at least six months so the numbers are comparable, and add prompts only at the start of a quarter.
Run it, and what to log
| Field | What to record |
|---|---|
| Engine | ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, Google AI Overview (if one appears) |
| Named | Yes or no: is the business named in the answer |
| Cited | Yes or no, and which page URL |
| Position | First, second, third name if a list |
| Competitors named | Every other business in the answer |
| Accuracy | Is the description of the business correct |
| Date | Run date; answers change week to week |
Run every prompt in a fresh session with no history, in the same city setting each time. Answers vary between runs; the monthly number is a share across the panel, not a single answer. Thirty prompts across four engines is 120 rows and about ninety minutes by hand.
The four numbers that matter
- Named share: the percentage of recommendation prompts where the business is named, per engine. This is the headline.
- Citation share: the percentage of question prompts where one of your pages is cited. This tells you which pages are working.
- Branded searches: impressions for your business name in Search Console. People who see you in an AI answer search your name next, so this rises before calls do.
- Leads: calls, forms and Business Profile calls, from the same monthly report as everything else.
Tools that automate it
| Tool | What it does | Typical price | Fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Otterly | Tracks prompts across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews; logs mentions and citations | $30–$100 / month | Small businesses and single sites |
| SE Ranking AI tracker | AI visibility alongside classic rank tracking | $50–$150 / month | Teams that already track rankings |
| Semrush AI toolkit | Brand mentions and share of voice in AI answers | Add-on to Semrush plans | Agencies and larger sites |
| Manual panel | Ten to thirty prompts in a spreadsheet | One to two hours a month | Any business; the version we run for growth-plan clients |
What the numbers tell you to do
- Named in Google AI Mode but not ChatGPT: check Bing indexing and whether GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot are allowed; add LinkedIn and Reddit presence.
- Cited for questions but not named for recommendations: the pages work; the entity does not. Fix reviews, directory listings and Business Profile completeness.
- Named but described wrong: the site, profile and directories disagree. Make name, description and services identical everywhere.
- Competitors named every time: read their cited pages and note what they answer that you do not. Write the page.
Report one page a month to the owner: the four numbers, the trend, and the three actions. No traffic charts. The growth plans on our pricing page include this report.
Do not over-measure
Thirty prompts, four engines, once a month is enough for a local business. Daily tracking shows noise, not change. Answers move when pages, reviews and mentions move, and those take weeks. Spend the time on the pages.
