How much does SEO cost in San Diego in 2026?

In San Diego in 2026, SEO agencies charge $1,000 to $5,000 a month on retainer for a local business, with the larger firms starting at $3,000 and enterprise work above $10,000. Freelancers charge $75 to $200 an hour. A local SEO website built with a page per service and city costs $8,000 to $25,000 once. Velour Web publishes its prices: care $99 a month, and growth plans at $500, $1,000 or $2,000 a month set by a ten-minute competition check we show you, on top of a site built for it. The right price is the one that clears three times its cost in gross profit from the leads it produces, and every proposal we write ends with that number.

What SEO costs in San Diego, by who does it

Ranges observed across San Diego agency and freelancer pricing pages and proposals in 2026.

  • Large agencies (the ones that rank for 'SEO agency San Diego'): $3,000 to $10,000+ a month, six to twelve month contracts, account managers, content and link programs.
  • Mid-size and boutique agencies: $1,000 to $3,000 a month, usually a mix of content, on-page fixes, Business Profile work and reporting.
  • Freelancers: $75 to $200 an hour, or $500 to $1,500 a month packages. Quality varies more than price.
  • SEO-included website builds: $8,000 to $25,000 once for a site with a page per service and city, schema and Business Profile setup, with optional monthly work after.
  • Velour Web: care $99 a month; Growth 500, 1000 and 2000 a month; sites $3,000 to $25,000. Published, and set by the competition check rather than the sales call.

What each price actually buys

A $1,000-a-month retainer typically buys two to four blog posts, some on-page edits and a report. A $3,000 retainer adds link outreach and more content. What neither usually buys is the structure: a real page for every service and city, schema on every page, a site that loads in under a second. That is a build, and most retainers are poured onto a site that never had it. Our growth plans buy new ranking pages every month, one, three or six, plus the Business Profile, reviews and a report of calls and AI citations, on a foundation built for it.

The question to ask before paying anything

What is one lead worth to you? Average job times gross margin times the share of leads you close. A plumber at $600, 50% and 40% has a $120 lead; a remodeler at $15,000, 30% and 20% has a $900 lead. Divide the monthly price by that and you have the calls a month that break even. We aim for three times that. If a $3,000 retainer needs 25 extra plumbing calls a month to break even, and the area cannot produce them, the price is wrong however good the agency. The calculator on our pricing page does this in thirty seconds.

What a fair SEO contract says

Six things to look for, and the ones we put in every proposal.

  • Month to month after any build, or a short initial term. Twelve-month lock-ins protect the agency, not you.
  • Deliverables you can count: pages published, profile posts, reviews requested, prompts checked. Not 'optimization hours'.
  • A report of calls, forms and branded searches, not rankings and traffic alone.
  • You own the site, the content, the Business Profile and every account. Always.
  • No ranking or lead guarantees. Anyone offering one is either lying or planning to blame you.
  • A written statement of what they will not sell you. Ours is the red list: categories where growth spending cannot clear break-even.

Our prices, and how the tier is set

A ten-minute look at the top ten results for your service in your city. Green (mostly small local businesses): Growth 500 or 1000, and a billing pause if there are no measurable leads by month six. Yellow (a few 100-review agencies or chains): Growth 1000 or 2000, no pause, a nine to twelve month horizon. Red (aggregators and 500-review businesses): we build the site on care and decline the growth plan. Los Angeles starts a tier higher. Growth 1000 and above include exclusivity: one client per industry per area.

Local SEO Websites

A local SEO website is a site structured to rank for the searches your customers actually type: one page for each service you offer and one for each city you serve, with FAQ and local-business schema, cost guides and a linked Google Business Profile. For San Diego service businesses it costs $8,000 to $25,000 and up depending on how many pages are needed, and takes 4 to 8 weeks.

FAQ

Common questions

How much does local SEO cost per month in San Diego?

$1,000 to $5,000 a month at most agencies, $500 to $1,500 at freelancers. Ours are $500, $1,000 or $2,000 a month depending on a competition check, on top of a site built for it, with care at $99.

Is SEO worth it for a small business?

When one lead's gross profit times the leads the plan can produce clears three times the plan's cost. The break-even math is on our pricing page. For red categories the honest answer is no, and we say so.

Why is SEO so expensive?

Because most of it is labor: research, writing real pages, building profiles, earning reviews and reporting. Cheap SEO is usually automated content and bought links, which Google and AI engines discount. The structure, a page per service and city on a fast site, is the part worth paying for once.

Should I pay for SEO or a new website?

If the site is a slow template with one page per topic, the website first: SEO poured onto it is wasted. If the site is fast and structured, SEO work on it compounds. Our audit tells you which.

Do you charge for a quote?

No. A 20-minute call, the competition check and a written proposal with your break-even are free. The AI visibility audit is $500 and credited toward any work.
