How to Appear in Google AI Overviews as a Local Business (2026)
By Alexey Chasin · Updated September 25, 2026 · 9 min read
Google AI Overviews cite pages that already rank on the first page for the query, answer the question directly in the first 100 words, use definitive language, and are structured with question headings, FAQ schema and tables. For a local business the path is: a page for each service and city that opens with the price and the answer, LocalBusiness and FAQPage schema, a Google Business Profile with matching details, and a refresh every three to six months. AI Overviews appear on about one in ten US searches today and Google is extending them to local and transactional queries through 2026 and 2027, so the local pages you build now are the ones that get cited when that happens.
What AI Overviews cite
CXL's study of 100 AI Overview pages and Contently's 2026 analysis reached the same conclusions. AI Overviews pull almost entirely from pages that already rank in the top results for the query or a close variant, so there is no shortcut around ranking. Within those pages, the ones cited answer the query directly near the top, use clean heading hierarchy, back claims with numbers, and avoid hedging. Cited text was almost twice as likely to be definitive than hedged. Freshness mattered: recently updated pages were cited more often than older pages with the same content.
Step 1: Rank for the question first
The AI Overview for 'how much does a roof replacement cost in Escondido' is assembled from the pages Google already ranks for that query. So the local SEO fundamentals come first: a page for that service in that city, the city and the service in the title and first heading, real local content, internal links from the rest of the site, and a Business Profile with the right category and service area. A business without a page for the question is not a candidate.
Step 2: Answer in the first 100 words
Open the page with the answer and the number. 'A roof replacement in Escondido costs $12,000 to $28,000 for a typical single-family home and takes two to four days.' Then the detail: what moves the price, what is included, what to ask. The AI Overview quotes the opening; the rest of the page earns the ranking. Pages that open with 'Welcome to our website' or 'We are a family-owned company' give the system nothing to extract.
Step 3: Use question headings and answer each one
- Each H2 is a question a customer types: 'How long does a roof replacement take?', 'Do I need a permit in Escondido?'
- The first sentence under each heading answers it. The detail follows.
- Add an FAQ block at the end with five to eight more questions, complete answers, and FAQPage schema.
- Put prices and comparisons in tables. AI Overviews extract tables cleanly.
Step 4: Mark up the business and the page
LocalBusiness or a subtype such as RoofingContractor with name, phone, service area, hours and sameAs links to the Business Profile and the directories. Service schema on each service page. FAQPage on the questions. BreadcrumbList so the page's place in the site is explicit. Speakable on the answer paragraph. This does not create a citation by itself. It removes ambiguity about who is answering, which is what a system deciding whether to trust a page needs.
Step 5: Keep the Business Profile matching
Google has said it is bringing AI Overviews to local queries next, and the local layer of Google is the Business Profile. The profile's name, phone, hours, categories and service area must match the site exactly. Fill the services list. Add ten or more real photos. Answer every review. Then link the profile from the site's structured data. A business whose profile and site disagree is two entities to Google, and neither is trusted enough to cite.
Step 6: Refresh on a schedule
The citation studies agree that recently updated pages are cited more. Refresh the top pages every three to six months: update prices, add this year's numbers, replace the examples, update the date in the title if it carries one, and show a 'last verified' date on the page. A quarterly refresh of ten pages is two hours of work and the cheapest citation signal available.
Step 7: Get mentioned elsewhere
AI Overviews, like every other engine, weigh third-party sources heavily. Detailed reviews on Google and Yelp, a listing on the directory for your trade, and the owner's real posts on LinkedIn all count. Reddit is the most-cited domain across Google's AI features, so one useful answer in the local subreddit when someone asks for a recommendation is worth more than a month of blog posts.
| Check | Pass |
|---|---|
| Ranks on page one for the query | Search Console shows the page for the query |
| Answer with a number in the first 100 words | Yes |
| Question headings, answered directly | Every H2 is a question |
| FAQ with FAQPage schema | Five to eight questions |
| LocalBusiness schema linked to the Business Profile | sameAs present |
| Business Profile matches the site | Name, phone, hours, categories, service area identical |
| Last verified within six months | Date shown on the page |
| Loads in under one second | PageSpeed 95+ |
AI Overviews appear on roughly 10% of US searches today and ads inside them went from 3% to 40% of those pages in one year. The organic citation is the free seat, and it goes to the page that answered first.
What to expect
For a green industry in a San Diego suburb, a new page built this way is indexed in one to four weeks, ranks for its city query in three to six months, and is cited by the AI Overview once it ranks and the query triggers one. For yellow industries in a city core, nine to twelve months. We check ten prompts a month and log the citations in the lead report, so you see it happen.
