Answer engine optimization (AEO): be the source Google's AI Overviews cite

Answer engine optimization is the work of making a business's page the source that Google's AI Overviews, AI Mode and featured answers quote when someone asks a question the business can answer: how much a service costs in a city, how long it takes, what to look for, who to hire. AI Overviews cite pages that already rank on the first page, answer directly in the first 100 words, use definitive language and are structured with question headings, FAQ schema and tables. Velour Web's AEO work is a page per service and city built that way, Business Profile alignment for the local layer, and a refresh every quarter. It is built into every site we make, retrofitted for $1,500 to $4,000, and run monthly on growth plans from $500, in San Diego County and Los Angeles.

How AI Overviews and AI Mode choose a source

Contently's and CXL's 2026 studies reached the same conclusion: AI Overviews draw almost entirely from pages already ranking for the query or a close variant, and among those they cite the ones that answer near the top, in plain definitive sentences, with numbers, on pages that were recently updated. AI Mode does the same across several sub-questions at once, so a site that answers the surrounding questions is cited more than once in a single answer. For local questions both read the Business Profile, reviews and hours alongside pages.

Google has said AI Overviews reach local and transactional searches through 2026 and 2027. The local pages built now are the ones cited when 'best roofer in Escondido' gets an AI answer above the map.

What we build

AEO is mostly writing and structure, done to a standard on every page that matters.

  • A page per service and per city, so there is a page to rank for each question. Our doorway guard fails any page under 600 words or copied from another.
  • The answer with the number in the first 100 words: 'A roof replacement in Escondido costs $12,000 to $28,000 and takes two to four days.'
  • Question headings answered in the first sentence, an FAQ block with five to eight real questions and FAQPage schema, prices in tables.
  • LocalBusiness and Service schema with sameAs to the Business Profile; Offer with a price range where prices exist; Speakable on the answer paragraph.
  • Business Profile identical to the site: name, phone, hours, categories, services, ten photos, reviews answered.
  • Quarterly refresh of the top pages: prices, this year's numbers, new examples, the year in the title, a visible last-verified date.
  • Coverage of the follow-up questions AI Mode asks next: how to choose, what to expect, availability.

How AEO differs from GEO

AEO is about Google's answer box and rewards ranking plus answering early. GEO is about chat engines and rewards corroboration across third-party sources. A local business needs both, and one set of pages serves both. Our growth plans include both halves; this page describes the Google half.

What we report

For each target query, monthly: whether an AI Overview appears, whether your page is cited, whether your business is named in AI Mode, and which competitor is cited instead. Search Console impressions for the query, branded searches, and leads. One page, three actions.

Pricing and fit

Included in every website we build. Retrofit on a fast existing site: $1,500 to $4,000 for the structure, schema and top-ten-page rewrite. Ongoing on Growth 500, 1000 or 2000 depending on the competition check. The fixed-price audit comes first. Our 76-site San Diego audit found 9% of local business homepages with FAQ schema and 7% with a price in the first third of the page, which is the size of the opening.

Local SEO Websites

A local SEO website is a site structured to rank for the searches your customers actually type: one page for each service you offer and one for each city you serve, with FAQ and local-business schema, cost guides and a linked Google Business Profile. For San Diego service businesses it costs $8,000 to $25,000 and up depending on how many pages are needed, and takes 4 to 8 weeks.

FAQ

Common questions

What is answer engine optimization?

Making a business's page the source Google's AI Overviews, AI Mode and featured answers cite for a question it can answer. It rewards pages that already rank and answer directly in the first 100 words with a number.

Can a small business get into AI Overviews?

Yes, for its own city and service questions, where the competition is thin. The requirements are a page for the question that ranks, an answer with a number at the top, question headings, FAQ schema and a matching Business Profile.

How often do AEO pages need updating?

Every three to six months, with real changes: prices, this year's numbers, examples, the year in the title and a visible last-verified date. Freshness is a citation signal in every 2026 study.

Does AEO replace SEO?

No. AI Overviews cite pages that already rank, so the local SEO fundamentals come first. AEO is the writing and structure that make a ranked page the one that gets quoted.

How do you track AI Overview citations?

Search Console does not separate them yet. We run the target queries monthly, log whether an AI Overview appears and who it cites, and watch branded searches, which rise when a business is cited.
