How to Do AI Search Optimization (AIO) in 2026: Step by Step for a Local Business
By Alexey Chasin · Updated September 25, 2026 · 12 min read
AI search optimization, also called AIO, GEO or AEO, is the work of making a business the source that ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode quote when someone asks a question you can answer. In 2026 it comes down to seven things: a direct answer in the first 100 words of every page, definitive language, original numbers, structured data that names the business, AI crawlers allowed, fast pages, and mentions on Reddit, LinkedIn and review sites, which produce about 6.5 times more AI citations than a business's own site. It is not a replacement for SEO. It is SEO with a new definition of winning.
The terms, in one paragraph
GEO, generative engine optimization, is the most-used name and means getting cited inside generated answers in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity. AEO, answer engine optimization, is usually used for Google's AI Overviews, AI Mode and featured answers. AIO, LLMO and GSO are used for the same work. Wikipedia noted in early 2026 that no agreed definition separates them, and practitioners use them interchangeably. We say AI search optimization to customers and use the acronyms only where people search for them. Our definitions guide sorts the terms out in detail.
How AI answers are built
Every AI answer engine does the same three things: it retrieves a set of pages that match the question, it reads them, and it writes an answer that quotes or paraphrases the ones it trusts most. Retrieval still runs on search. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode draw from Google's index, ChatGPT search draws from Bing's, Perplexity runs its own crawler and index. So ranking still gets you into the candidate set. What the 2026 citation studies added is which candidates get quoted: the ones that answer early, plainly, with numbers, on pages the engine could read and on topics where the domain already ranks.
Step 1: Answer first, in definitive language
Neuroflash's analysis of ChatGPT citations found 44% come from the first 30% of the page. Contently's 2026 study of AI Overview citations found cited text is almost twice as likely to be definitive (36%) than hedged (20%). Open every page with the answer and the number in it. 'A dental implant in Carlsbad costs $3,500 to $5,500 per tooth and takes three to six months' gets quoted. 'Costs vary, contact us for a consultation' never does.
Step 2: Publish original numbers
Content with original statistics sees 30 to 40% more AI visibility than content that repeats someone else's, across the 2026 studies from Frase and The HOTH. A local business has numbers nobody else has: what its jobs cost, how long they take, how many it did last year, what the average customer spends. Put them on the page with the date. A study of your own market, even a small one, becomes the thing every AI answer about that market cites.
Step 3: Structure the page for extraction
- One question per heading, phrased the way people ask it: 'How much does a kitchen remodel cost in San Diego?'
- A short direct answer under each heading, then the detail.
- An FAQ block with five to eight real questions and complete answers, marked up with FAQPage schema.
- Tables for prices and comparisons. AI systems extract tables cleanly and quote them.
- A 'last verified' date, and a real refresh every three to six months. Freshness is a ranking and citation signal in every 2026 study.
Step 4: Name the entity
AI systems reason about entities: this business, in this place, doing these things. Structured data is how you state that without ambiguity: LocalBusiness or ProfessionalService with name, phone, service area, hours and sameAs links to the Business Profile, LinkedIn, Yelp and the directories; Person for the owner; Service for each service; Article for guides with a named author. Then the same name, phone and description everywhere else on the web. Inconsistency reads as two different businesses, and neither gets cited.
Step 5: Let the crawlers read the site
GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended and Bingbot each respect robots.txt. Allow them. Publish llms.txt, a plain-text index of your most important pages with one line each, at the site root. Keep the sitemap current and submit it in Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. A page that loads in under a second gets crawled more often and more completely than one that takes five, so speed is a citation factor as well as a ranking one.
Step 6: Be mentioned where AI looks first
The finding that changes the most behavior: brands are roughly 6.5 times more likely to be cited through third-party sources than through their own website. Reddit is the most-cited domain across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Mode and AI Overviews. LinkedIn is the most-cited domain for professional queries, and its citation frequency doubled between November 2025 and February 2026. For a local business this means detailed reviews on Google and Yelp, a real profile on the directory for your trade, one useful answer in your city's subreddit when someone asks for a recommendation, and the owner posting actual work on LinkedIn. Presence, not promotion.
Step 7: Measure citations, not just clicks
Pick ten prompts a real customer would type: 'best plumber in Escondido', 'how much does a website cost in San Diego', 'who does dental implants in Carlsbad'. Once a month, run them in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Mode, and log who is named and which page is cited. Track branded searches in Search Console, since people who see you in an AI answer often search your name next. Count calls and forms. Tools like Otterly and SE Ranking automate the prompt tracking for $30 to $100 a month; the manual version costs an hour.
What AIO is not
- It is not a trick. There is no tag or file that makes an AI cite a page that does not deserve it.
- It is not separate from SEO. Every engine retrieves from a search index first. Pages that do not rank do not get read.
- It is not content volume. Ten thin AI-written posts a week dilute the domain. One page with original numbers outperforms all of them.
- It is not finished. Refresh the top pages quarterly and keep the year in the title current.
| Check | Pass looks like |
|---|---|
| Answer in the first 100 words | Two or three definitive sentences with a number |
| Question headings | Each H2 is a question a customer asks |
| Original data | At least one number nobody else has, dated |
| FAQ with schema | Five to eight questions, complete answers, FAQPage markup |
| Entity markup | LocalBusiness or Service with sameAs links; Article with author |
| Crawlable | Allowed in robots.txt, listed in sitemap and llms.txt |
| Fast | Under one second, PageSpeed 95+ |
| Fresh | Last verified date within six months |
Every page on this site is built to this checklist, and the site is the demonstration: 149 pages, sub-second load, structured data on every page, AI crawlers allowed, and the answer in the first paragraph. Run any page through the checks above.
What it costs a local business
Built into a new site, AI search optimization adds nothing to the price: it is how we write and structure every page, so a $3,000 to $8,000 business site already has it. Retrofitting an existing fast site runs $1,500 to $4,000 for the structure, schema, crawler access and a rewrite of the top ten pages. Ongoing, the growth plans at $500 to $2,000 a month add new answer-first pages every month and the monthly citation check. A fixed-price AI visibility audit tells you where you stand before spending any of it.
