Zero-Click Search: How a Local Business Wins When Google Answers Without a Click (2026)
By Alexey Chasin · Updated September 25, 2026 · 8 min read
Zero-click search means the customer got what they needed on the results page, from an AI Overview, a map listing, a featured answer or a phone number, and never visited a website. In the fourth quarter of 2025 that was 56% of desktop Google searches and more on phones, and forecasts for 2027 run past 80%. For a local business it is not a loss if the business is the thing on the results page: the name, the phone number, the price, the review. The strategy is to be the answer, not the link: a complete Business Profile with the phone number, answer-first pages that get cited with the business named, prices on the page, reviews that mention the service and city, and a brand people search by name after they see it.
What zero-click actually is
A search ends without a click when the results page itself answered the question. For local searches that has been true for years: the map pack shows the name, rating, hours and a call button, and the customer calls from it. AI Overviews and AI Mode extended the same pattern to questions: 'how much does a water heater cost in Escondido' now gets an answer with a price and a source, and most people stop there. Digital Applied put desktop zero-click at 56% in late 2025; Atlas Softweb's 2027 outlook runs toward 85%. The click is disappearing. The customer is not.
Why it is not the end of local SEO
Every zero-click surface is built from something a business controls: a Business Profile, a page, a review, a price. The map pack is the profile. The AI Overview is a page that answered first. The featured answer is a paragraph on a page. The call button is the phone number on the profile. A business that owns those inputs gets the customer without the click. A business that only had a homepage and hoped for traffic loses the click and the customer. Zero-click punishes the second kind and rewards the first.
Six moves that turn an answer into a call
1. Put the phone number where the answer is
The Business Profile call button is the most-used zero-click action in local search. The profile needs the right number, tracked if possible, and hours that are right so the call button shows as open. On pages, the phone number belongs in the first screen and in the structured data, so an AI answer that cites the page can carry the number.
2. Be the cited source, with your name in the answer
An AI Overview that says 'according to Velour Web, a business website in San Diego costs $3,000 to $8,000' has done the marketing whether or not anyone clicks. That happens when the page answers first, in definitive language, with the number, and the business is a clear entity in the schema. Pages written that way are cited with attribution; pages that hedge are paraphrased without it.
3. Put prices on the page
Prices are what people search for and what AI answers extract. A page with 'water heater replacement $1,800 to $3,200' is the source for that question. A page with 'call for pricing' is skipped, and the customer gets a competitor's number with the price. A range with what moves it is enough; it also filters out the calls you do not want.
4. Earn reviews that name the service and the city
Reviews are quoted in map packs, AI Overviews and AI Mode. 'Replaced our water heater in Escondido same day, $2,100 as quoted' is a review that gets shown. 'Great service, five stars' is not. Ask customers for the specific version, by text, right after the job.
5. Build a brand people search by name
The path is now: see the name in an answer, search the name, call. Branded searches in Search Console are the leading indicator of zero-click success, and the branded result page (site, profile, reviews, directory listings) has to be clean. Search your own name monthly and fix whatever is wrong or missing.
6. Count calls and forms, not visits
Move the report from traffic to leads: Business Profile calls, site calls through a tracking number, forms, branded impressions, and AI citations from a monthly prompt panel. A month with less traffic and more calls is a good month. Most agency reports still show the wrong number.
| Surface | Fed by | The customer's action |
|---|---|---|
| Map pack | Business Profile, reviews, proximity | Call, directions |
| AI Overview | Pages that rank and answer early; Business Profile for local | Reads the answer; calls the business named |
| AI Mode | Pages ranking for sub-questions; profile and reviews | Asks follow-ups; calls at the end |
| Featured answer | A paragraph that answers the query directly | Reads it; may search the name |
| Knowledge panel | Entity consistency across site, profile, directories | Calls or visits the profile |
Zero-click is a problem for publishers who sell page views. It is an opportunity for a local business that sells a service, because the results page now carries your phone number, your price and your reviews to people who never had to find your site.
What to do this month
- Fix the Business Profile: number, hours, categories, services, ten photos, every review answered.
- Put a price range on every service page and the phone number in the first screen.
- Rewrite the opening of the ten most important pages to answer first, with the number.
- Send review requests that ask for the service and the city.
- Search your business name in Google, ChatGPT and Gemini and fix what is wrong.
- Change the monthly report to calls, forms, branded searches and citations.
