Wix or Squarespace vs. a Custom Website for a San Diego Small Business
By Alexey Chasin · Updated September 17, 2026 · 7 min read
Wix and Squarespace are fine for a new business that needs a presence this week for under $500. They hold a business back once it needs to rank for services in several cities, load fast on phones, or own its site: builder sites are slow, their SEO controls are limited, and you cannot move the site off the platform. A custom site costs $3,000 to $8,000 and fixes all three. Moving keeps your domain and, with redirects, your rankings.
What builders do well
- Live in a day, for $16 to $50 per month.
- No developer needed for small edits.
- Templates that look decent out of the box.
- Hosting, SSL and basic forms included.
Where they hold a business back
Speed
Builder sites load the whole editor's framework on every page. Mobile PageSpeed scores of 30 to 60 are normal, and there is nothing you can do about it inside the platform.
Local SEO structure
Ranking across San Diego County means a page per service and per city with schema markup and clean internal linking. Builders allow pages, but schema is limited, URL control is partial, and every added page makes the site slower.
Ownership
You can export your domain and, sometimes, your text. You cannot export the site. Leaving means rebuilding, which is why many businesses stay on a platform that is holding them back.
Looking like everyone else
Templates are shared by thousands of businesses. In a competitive local market that reads as generic.
Side by side
| Wix / Squarespace | Custom-coded | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | $16–$50 / month, plus apps | $3,000–$8,000 once, $0–$20 / month hosting |
| Mobile load time | 3–6 seconds | Under 1 second |
| Schema and SEO control | Limited | Full |
| Service and city pages | Possible, but slow the site | Designed for it |
| Ownership | Platform owns the site | You own everything |
| Editing | Drag and drop | Simple editing for content that changes |
When to move
- You want leads from more than your immediate neighborhood.
- Competitors with worse work outrank you.
- Your PageSpeed score on mobile is under 70.
- You are paying for apps to do things a normal site does for free.
- You want to own the site and the domain outright.
How the move works
You keep the domain. We export the content, rebuild the pages as custom code on your own hosting, redirect any URL that changes, and point the domain at the new site. Downtime is minutes. The builder subscription can be cancelled after launch. It costs $3,000 to $8,000 for most businesses and takes 2 to 4 weeks.
Not sure whether to move yet? Run your site through Google PageSpeed Insights on mobile. Under 70 means visitors are leaving before the page loads.
