Why Your San Diego Business Website Is Not Showing Up on Google (and the 7 Fixes)

By Alexey Chasin · Updated September 17, 2026 · 9 min read

A business website usually fails to show up on Google for one of seven reasons: it is not indexed, it is too slow, it has no page for the service being searched, it does not name the city, its Google Business Profile is missing or wrong, it has no reviews or links, or it is new and simply needs time. Each has a specific fix, and most can be checked in an hour with Google Search Console and PageSpeed Insights.

First, check the two free tools

Google Search Console tells you whether Google has indexed your pages and which searches show them. PageSpeed Insights tells you how fast the site loads on a phone. Together they diagnose most of the problems below.

1. Google has not indexed the site

Search Google for site:yourdomain.com. If nothing appears, Google does not have your pages. Common causes: a "discourage search engines" setting left on after launch, a noindex tag, a robots.txt that blocks everything, or a brand-new domain nobody has linked to.

Fix: verify the site in Search Console, submit the sitemap, remove any noindex or blocking rules, and request indexing for the main pages.

2. The site is too slow

Google measures page experience and uses it as a tiebreaker. A site scoring under 50 on mobile PageSpeed also loses visitors before they see the phone number. The usual causes are page-builder bloat, uncompressed images and too many scripts.

Fix: compress images to WebP, remove unused plugins and scripts, and if the site is on a builder or heavy theme, rebuild it as custom code.

3. There is no page for the service people search for

Google ranks pages, not businesses. If someone searches "water heater replacement Carlsbad" and your site has one page that says "plumbing services", there is nothing to rank.

Fix: a page for each service, written to answer the search: what it is, what it costs, what to expect, FAQs.

4. The site does not name the city

Local searches include a place. If your site never says Carlsbad, Chula Vista or North Park, Google has no reason to show it for those searches.

Fix: name your city and service area on the homepage and contact page, and build a page for each city you want leads from, with real local content.

5. The Google Business Profile is missing, wrong or duplicated

The Business Profile is what appears in the map results, which for most local searches sit above the website results. Missing categories, a wrong address, an old phone number or a duplicate listing keep a business out of the map.

Fix: claim the profile, set the primary category correctly, list services, add photos and hours, link to the site, and remove duplicates.

6. No reviews and no links

Google trusts businesses that other people vouch for. A profile with no reviews and a site nobody links to ranks below a competitor with 40 reviews and a few local mentions.

Fix: ask every happy customer for a Google review with a direct link, and get listed in local directories, associations and suppliers' sites with the same name, address and phone.

7. It is just new

New sites and new pages take time. Indexing is days, impressions are weeks, and competitive terms are months.

Fix: keep adding useful pages, keep collecting reviews, and check Search Console monthly. Rankings compound.

Most San Diego business sites we audit fail three of these at once: speed, service pages and the Business Profile. Fixing those three is usually enough to start appearing within two months.

FAQ

Related questions

How long does it take for a new website to show up on Google?

Days to be indexed if the sitemap is submitted, 4 to 8 weeks to start showing impressions, and 3 to 6 months to rank for competitive local terms.

Why does my competitor outrank me with a worse website?

Usually more reviews, a better Business Profile, a page for the service being searched, or a faster site. Rankings reward specificity and trust signals more than design.

Do I need to pay for Google Ads to show up?

No. Ads appear above organic and map results, but a complete Business Profile and a site with service and city pages appear without paying per click.

Can you audit my site?

Yes. A free call covers the basics, and a redesign or local SEO project starts with a written audit of speed, indexing, pages and the Business Profile.
