How Long Does It Take to Build a Website? Realistic Timelines for Businesses
By Alexey Chasin · Updated September 17, 2026 · 6 min read
A small-business website takes 2 to 4 weeks from kickoff to launch when the content is ready. Local SEO sites with many city and service pages and online stores take 4 to 8 weeks. Web apps are scoped individually and usually take 2 to 6 months. The biggest cause of delay is content and photos arriving late, followed by slow design approvals.
Typical timelines
| Project | Timeline | What sets the pace |
|---|---|---|
| Template site on a builder | 1–5 days | How fast you type |
| Custom small-business site (5–15 pages) | 2–4 weeks | Content readiness, design approval |
| Website redesign / migration | 2–5 weeks | Page count, integrations, content rewrites |
| Local SEO site (service + city pages) | 4–8 weeks | Research and writing per page |
| Online store | 4–8 weeks | Catalog size, payment and shipping setup |
| Web app or software | 2–6 months | Scope, milestones, testing |
Week by week for a business website
Week 1: discovery and design
A 20-minute call, a written scope with a launch date, and desktop and mobile designs within 3 to 5 days. You approve the design before any code is written.
Weeks 2 to 3: build
Pages are hand-coded, forms connected, content placed, SEO and schema added. You get a preview link and see progress every few days.
Week 3 or 4: launch
Final review on phones and desktops, domain connected, sitemap submitted to Google, Business Profile linked. Launch itself takes an afternoon.
What makes projects late
- Content that is not ready. If you are writing the copy, have it done before the build starts, or let the developer write it.
- Photos. Stock photos are instant; real photos need a shoot. Book it in week one.
- Design approvals that sit for a week. Set a rule: feedback within two business days.
- Scope changes after the build starts. Each one adds days. Get everything into the written scope.
- Access. Domain registrar, hosting, Google Business Profile, existing analytics. Gather the logins at kickoff.
How to launch in two weeks
- Have your logo, brand colors, copy and photos ready on day one.
- Approve the design within 48 hours.
- Keep the scope to what launches, and add the rest after.
- Give the developer access to the domain and Business Profile at kickoff.
A launch date should be in the written scope. If a quote has no date, the project has no end.
